So Many People Get Overlooked at the Holidays

Each year for the holidays we seem to talk to someone that isn’t sure what they are doing for the holidays. For our house that’s Christmas, but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t invite people celebrating any other holidays from joining us. Hearing the words that someone doesn’t know what they are going to do for their holiday because they have lost family or can’t make it home for the holidays, always spurs me to invite them to feel free to join us.

My husband always claims I make too much food, but this last Thanksgiving I responded to a family on Thanksgiving morning that asked if anyone had a spare meal for her kids to get a chance to have a traditional Thanksgiving meal. I immediately packed up plates and was in my car. We hadn’t made a desert yet, but everything else went on the plate.

I know I can’t invite everyone, and my mother in the past has questioned why I have to invite anyone extra… but my heart breaks at the thought of people going hungry when there is so much out there, and my family has been so lucky.

I remember years ago inviting people from the doctor's office (that I had struck up a conversation with) to join us for an Easter Egg Hunt in our yard. My youngest is no longer willing to look for eggs throughout our yard, but I’m sure I will be back at it when/if my family includes grandchildren.

In the past I’ve had students and friends join us, this year cousins and other family were invited — even people I work with that might not have had family to go to. We’ve even had extra children with us for Christmas after their family had an emergency. A friend who was rushed to the hospital and their youngest slept in a playpen at the food of our bed on Christmas Eve. Rushing to figure out something for a gift at the last minute so that everyone was included.

One holiday of meals though doesn’t take the place of all the other meals during the year.
