Am I out of my mind?

I have had the feeling that I am approaching a major crossroads in my life for a while now. As Comm app season stares me dead in the eyes, I couldn’t help but start to think about all of the difficult choices I am going to have to make after application results are returned in the spring. Out of all of these concerns, my greatest may be my stubborn reluctance to let go of another subject field I hold dear to my heart: Econ. I’ve had the idealist notion that if I were to somehow get into Comm, that I would not turn my back on the subject that has always brought me the most joy. Yet it seems an incredibly daunting task to try and concentrate in either finance/accounting/marketing (yeah I really don’t know lol) while obtaining a second major in economics and also finishing off my French Minor. Did I mention I want to study abroad through McIntire spring of my third year?

With so many moving parts involved in my academic future, I figured it was wise to use this opportunity to search on LinkedIn for Comm grads who had also gone out of their way to secure a second major outside of McIntire. After combing through my search results, I found eight people that I felt could best respond to my indecisiveness. I ended up getting four emails back and scheduling two calls, each for around 20 minutes.

Of the four emails I received, I had one person who concentrated in marketing and majored in psychology, another who did I.T. and spanish, a third with finance and history, and a fourth with finance and statistics. The responses I received were very interesting to say the least, as the first two were very passionate about making me understand that the first semester of ICE was not one to be underestimated, and to really focus long and hard on whether or not that second major is really going to do that much good for me in the long run (relative to the cost it took to get it). My first contact was Sierra Debord, who basically advised me to steer clear of a second major as she remembers that, “I already didn’t see any of my friends first semester thanks to ICE… putting myself through the hazardous journey that is the Psych major was really a short-sided move and wasn’t probably the best thing I could have done for my long-term health.” The final two contacts were ambivalent about the second major because they thought of it as a sort of escape channel through which to get a breath of fresh air away from the hustle and bustle of McIntire. They did, however, warn me that any undue time/effort spent on outside majors and minors could seriously damage your short-term success within the Comm School.

I learned a tremendous amount about the reasonableness of my own future plans thanks to this project. Thanks to the input I received from alumni who have walked in my shoes before, I am now able to possess a more complete understanding of what it is I would be subjecting myself to if I decide to get the best of both worlds while also fulfilling my desire to become fluent in French. Of course, there is the very real chance that I don’t get into McIntire, at which point I may toss away all of this worrying and instead pick up a pair of complementary majors that peak my interest. We’ll see how this goes.
