Celebrating Our 27th Year As a Married Couple

The Journey

27 years ago on this day, we said I do. It was a basic and powerful agreement not relegated to easy, fluffy, BS.

This is what we agreed to:

When the sun shines and its hot.

When it rains like hell.

When you’re tired and whiny.

When you can’t have your fricken way.

After you’ve worked all day and your work isn’t over.

When you don’t feel like it. You don’t get to stay parked, whining about how difficult it is.

Remembering that, unconditional means not using sex as a bargaining tool. Because when we weren’t so cognitively aware, that physical connection reduced the emotional tension and — at least — could bring our mental state back to neutral, where new conversations could begin.

Realizing that there are three types of goals and dreams that both of us support equally. Hers, mine, and ours. We figured, If you don’t get that math correct, you’re in for some additional headaches and heartaches.

And the best way to get that middle finger shoved in your face is to turn into a self-center prick, thinking the world revolves around you because your paycheck is bigger.

Those that didn’t figure that one out, were ordered by the divorce court to give up half the goods as part of the divorce settlement — Bringing into a clear view that — highness — doesn’t always remain as such.

So, after all the opportunities and struggles of life — that make us better at being ourselves — it’s easier to accept the reality of the journey we openly agreed to. Shit doesn’t get easier.

And as the saying goes: We just get stronger and better at: excepting things, we can’t change. Changing the things we can. And most importantly, knowing when to smile and keep your mouth shut because tomorrow is another day. And Fairy tales live in the movies where the script can be written to perfection.
