A micro story about Silas and his new job.

A very anxious Silas stared at the quaint brownstone building in front of him. Truthfully, he had nothing to fear, as he had taken the classes and passed the test. He stared at the small flight of decrepit wooden stairs leading towards the big oaken door and sighed. Small flights of scary stairs and big oaken doors were not a part of his examinations. This must be a sign. Time to go home and tell dear mother that “Yes the pool cleaning business is actually quite lucrative if you live off of cans of beans,” and “Really, if you think about it, I tried and that’s worth your love and support.” If only he hadn’t been caught smoking cigarettes in his room. If only that event hadn’t triggered his mother’s constant nagging about his status in life and lack of a ‘prestigious job’. If only this ‘prestigious job’ as she kept calling it wasn’t the way he could continue to live rent-free in her house. If only.

With a hefty sigh, and a kick of the pebbled ground beneath his mother approved black loafers; Silas took his first step up the stairs. He dared not look at the door, but kept fixated on the steps as he climbed. He counted as he went…one…two…etc. His breath and hands increasingly became shaky as he finally counted the eighth and final step. This was just too much for poor fragile Silas to take.

Just as he reached the door, the creak of wood and rusted hinges stole his gaze from the ground. The door opened slowly and time stopped completely. Blue eyes met hazel ones, birds sang, bells rang, and so on. Silas was in love. She was perfect, more so the most beautiful woman he could ever have even wished to meet. She was petite, had the blackest of hair, and the cutest dimples. A mole directly in the center of her nose centered his attention just above a pair of immaculate teeth. She looked nothing like his mother. Absolutely and amazingly perfect. She opened her mouth, and Silas held his breath waiting for the first melodic sounds that would grace his ears from this goddess.

“Get the fuck of the porch you goddamn pervert or I will have Estaban get the dogs!” She screamed and very succinctly the door was slammed shut.

Silas was still frozen in time, but now it was quiet, and he heard not a single bird sing. There were bells ringing, but they were definitely in his head and they were saying it was time to go the hell home. “W-What?” Silas asked the big door. The door stayed quiet, because doors can not talk as much as we wish they could.

After a few moments of blinking and processing what the girl said, Silas felt he had fully done his due diligence. He had conquered the steps, which as a reminder to you poor reader were not on the test, and had even knocked on the door. Truth be told he never thought he would make it this far. Finding peace in his accomplishments, he pivoted around and began his trip down the steps back to the comforts of pool chemicals and smoking cigarettes in his car.
