Youth Poet Amanda Gorman Recites Poem At Presidential Inauguration

PROFILES IN LEADERSHIP

So many things that need to be said were said so beautifully with her poetry

Every four or eight years, the regular transfer of power from one U.S. President to another is a major inflection point. This year, the country feels more divided than ever and on edge, with discontent and hatred erupting into violence.

My hope going forward is there is healing and a greater sense of inclusion and unity in the great country that is America. Like people, no country is perfect, but we can all strive to become better.

If you profess to love your country, but hate and wish ill on any of your fellow countrymen and women, is that really love? Or is it something else? This applies to anyone, regardless of their political affiliation.

The last four years have shown us that there are a lot of unaddressed problems in this country and many people feeling hurt, getting hurt, and hurting others. I was moved by the speech by Youth Poet Amanda Gorman for the elegant and insightful way she acknowledged America’s present and future. She did not shy away from either the good or the bad, and made it clear that the beautiful future is ours to create today.
