Healing Begets Healing

Instead of focusing on the work, let’s focus on how far we’ve already come

I have a couple of friends who have been through a lot, but are now stable with good jobs and spouses. They are at stages of their lives where they have less stress coming in, but they are still stuck in survival mode.

They’re aware that they “shouldn’t” be as stressed as they are.

Stress does not know “should” from “shouldn’t.” If you feel like you’re in mortal danger, it doesn’t matter if you’re at a child’s birthday party or in the middle of a war zone.

This is hard to reconcile with the logic brain, who makes us feel shame for being “overly dramatic.”

Stress with shame added. What a great combination.

It’s easy to focus on the work that has to be done. The enormity of it. Maybe it’s cutting back on alcohol, eating better, getting a new job, writing more, being a better parent, overcoming childhood traumas, medical issues . . . well, I could go on and on about the enormity of it.

And so we look for guidance. Help. A shortcut.

But why?

You have your whole life to work through your journey. Why rush it?

Healing begets healing. If you think your life is “fine” except you need to exercise more, watch what happens when you begin to pull on that thread. Join a sports team or a gym.

Your new habit sticks.

Suddenly, you need a standing desk at work. Suddenly, you’re taking breaks to do push-ups. . . not because you feel guilty, but because you now enjoy your body.

Suddenly, you’re going on walks during your lunch break instead of eating while staring at a screen. Suddenly, you realize your job is toxic, and you need to change careers.

That change began just by healing the mind-body connection.

Healing begets healing. You cannot heal just a part of yourself. The mind and the body are one; your life and its effects on your body are one. You may think you only want to heal one part of yourself, but keep everything else the same.
