Old Friend

A wave of whispers serenaded me. They were sweet and gentle. All around was nothing but darkness. I do not recall the memory of a vision being present, whether I was ever gifted with such ability…

A Moment in the Life of Us

I fell yesterday on the bathroom floor. My husband, who was peacefully napping in the living room after his morning run, came to help me after I yelled for him as loudly as I could. Despite the fact that neither of us could do anything to get me up after many attempts because of my disabilities and his weakened strength, he blurted out “Need me to call a tow truck?”

I prayed to the Lord for His help while attempting to get to my knees as I hung onto the shower bench for support and leverage from my awkward position on the floor next to the tub. My long legs were splayed in front of me, but thankfully I wasn’t hurt. I had fallen while trying to transfer onto the toilet from my wheelchair.

“Father God, thank you for keeping me out of pain! Please help me to find the strength to get out of this predicament.”

I needed to rest after the exertion and to gather strength to help myself. I carefully laid my head on the hard tile floor so as not to crack my skull, something that as of late seemed to occur with regularity. My husband paced the floor, thinking of how he could help me. As he was pondering various scenarios, he blurted out, “Need me to call a tow truck?”

Thankfully, I was already lying down. I burst into peals of laughter as my body contorted to the strain on my belly. So here I was on the master bathroom floor, curled in the fetal position with tears streaming down my face as my stressed husband continued his thought, oblivious to why I find this humorous.

“The drivers are usually big and strong,” he adds.

This causes another bout of laughing in me. At this point my breathing is labored as I attempt to inhale between giggles. Finally, I catch my breath enough to replace the oxygen in my lungs.

“Thank God I’m not hurt,” I say after he asks if I’m okay.

After telling me he needs to think and walks into the next room, he reappears with a pillow in his hands. Keep in mind that I am viewing this as I’m looking up from the tiled floor.

“Planning on napping?” I ask him as the sight of him holding that pillow has me in a fit of laughter again..

“This is a serious situation. It’s not funny and I’m trying to figure this out. You laughing isn’t helping any.”
