Dr. Heartache

A heart-to-heart every day will keep Dr. Heartache away.

NURSE! Call the doctor in here quick,
It is an emergency,
I need a doctor,
To take and sew up this broken heart,
Use the needle and thread,
He may have to take the shards that remain,
Of my shattered hopes and dreams,
Bandaids won’t cover this wound,
The bullet holes of betrayal,
Have pierced me immeasurably,
Gouging my heart like the blade of a dagger,
Scraping, digging, hollowing,
Until it is but an empty shell,
Far too immense and deep,
For a bandage to cover,
Tell the doctor to get the lead out,
Our love needs to be rushed,
Straight to the operating room,
Our marriage is in desperate need of surgery,
To close this gaping hole,
We have inadvertently allowed contempt to carve out,
To suck the poison of resentment,
We have permitted to surge through,
The veins of our partnership,
Give us a pill, a shot, I don’t care,
Whatever it may take,
To make it better,
Administer an X-ray,
You will observe what I mean,
The picture will reveal a dark hole,
Where our trust and respect used to be,
Time has cut out the heart of our union,
When we refused to use forgiveness,
Failed to take our daily dose,
Of proper and open communication,
We are currently on life support,
Not yet ready to pull the plug,
Our love is flatlining,
We have tried every home remedy in the book,
Nothing is working,
Don’t let this be our fate,
Doc, there has to be something you can do,
An antidote, a cure, a prescription,
Some way to treat this disorder,
A miracle drug, a cure-all.
