Functionality Improvement Tools

This API is a replacement for its predecessor — the Extract API. It contains a set of functions that enable interactivity automation with Tableau extracts, know as .hyper files.

In addition to supporting previous Extract API 2.0 features for creating and updating extract files. This version of the API has a new set of features referred to as CRUD operations.

Load data directly from a CSV file much faster without having to write special code to do so. Interact directly with the .hyper file using traditional SQL commands and queries.

You can easily interact with extract files containing billions of rows of data.

This API is only compatible with Tableau 10.5 and later.

Use Cases

a. Create new extracts, improve performance and provide offline access to data sources.
b. Open existing files — insert, delete, update or read data (write data to file from non-native data sources).
c. Automate custom extract, transform and load (ETL) processes (example rolling window updates or custom incremental updates).

This fast and flexible API enables you to discover and query assets and metadata indexed by the Tableau Catalogue. You can find out specific information about relationships between assets or their structures.

Use Cases:

a. Discover data that is associated with the content published to your Tableau Online or Tableau Server, search for assets like tables, databases, and data sources.
b. Track linage or relationships between assets, like data sources and workbooks (example identify which workbook is using each of the published data sources).
c. Perform impact analysis using upstream and downstream linage information (you can evaluate the impact of changes to content — worksheets).
d. Create a process that identifies authors you should notify each time a data source change occurs.

This API allows you to create your own mobile app with Tableau visualisations. The MAB is a sample open-source mobile app that demonstrates how to connect and stay signed in to Tableau Servers, embed content and utilise the JavaScript API.
