You Are the Creative Director of Your Own Life

What it means to have creative agency.

Yesterday I shared the above post to my Instagram story.

And when I first saw it on my feed, I was like “HECK YEAH I AM!” and then immediately went to read the caption because OOO-eee mama, this goin’ be good, but it turned out to be about something different and I stopped reading.

But that made me think: what was I hoping the caption had read? What words had I been hoping to eagerly soak up?

Well, since I can’t actually read the caption that I wanted to read, I realized — hey! I could write it myself. As everyone has said since the beginning of ever apparently: write what you want to read.

So here it is. What I wanted to read. What being a Creative Director of your own life means to me…

You are the Creative Director of your own life. Not just Director. And not just with lower case letters, either — Creative AND Capitalized. Official. Appointed. Artistic. Innovative.

What I love about that title is that it gives you agency. Your life isn’t something you’re just along on the ride for. It’s something you manage. Something you shape and form. And it doesn’t have to be boring either. It doesn’t have to be standard. With a standard job. In a standard house. On a standard street in a standard city.

You can get creative with it. Spicy. Wacky. Whatever adjective fits you best. You can scratch everything you know about what life is supposed to be and start thinking outside the box.

Want to live on the beach and sip margaritas? Of course you do! You can make it happen. Want to stroll down the streets of Stockholm clutching a cappuccino on your way to a meeting with other creative and energetic people? Obviously! You can make it happen. Want to build a business from your bedroom that’s totally self-automated and allows you the free time to explore your hobbies? YAS! You can make it happen too.

More than that, you’re the Director. The Captain. The Big Kahuna. What you say goes. The opinions of other people don’t matter, because the only person you really need to impress is you. You don’t have to wait for someone else to appoint you, because you already are the Creative Director.

So make a decision today that a Creative Director would make.

Be bold. Make moves. Wear fishnet tights. Add glitter to something that doesn’t need glitter.

And remember: you are the Creative Director of your own life.
