A Poem

Bells ring through
The frozen air
Crisp and clear
Like newly polished glass.

The clock sings its hymn and
Our visitor is here
Bringing apples and oranges
The size of softballs
Direct from the northern fruit trees.

A Douglas Fir is saturated
With light and ornaments
Each one holding its own story.
Cotton mimics the snow deep
In the branches and
Tasteful delicacies follow like the
Satin train of a bridal gown.

Ham
Special potato salad only Oma can make
Lime punch mixed only tonight
Creme de mint that turns my nose up in
Disgust
As the green bottle
Guards the bowl.

Laughter used to ring through these times
But that is forgotten.
Replaced with tense impostors
Putting on a happy face
Walking on egg shells.

“Do not touch the tree!”
The needles will fall.
Intruders came one year
My stares dripped with venom
No one noticed
But they never returned.

Glowing lights twinkle depicting a
Candy cane village somewhere in the
Realm of imagination.
Believe that when the tradition is broken
Air is cut off
Like icy hands around your throat.
Childhood memories are replaced with the cool
Reality of adult life.
How I wish I could return to
The Candy Cane Village
Where traditions are relaxed and fun.
