Top 7 Reasons I Became a Feminist

In a Stream of Consciousness Order

The other night when my husband and I were talking about how I had become a Top Writer in Feminism, he said “But I don’t think of you as a feminist.” And I said, “When it comes to my thoughts on reclaiming female sexual empowerment, you think of me that way, right?” And he agreed. But then it made me think about all of the personal reasons that spurred me to define myself as a feminist, and so here they are in a stream-of-consciousness order:

I picture my abuela slumped over the hot oven, working hard day in and day out to cook meals made with love for her family. Married at the tender age of 16. Birthed 11 children. The matriarch. My bubbie, divorced in her 40s when she mustered the courage to leave an unhappy marriage. A Holocaust survivor, she suffered from survivor’s guilt. And yet I could tell she enjoyed having that apartment to herself. She made it a point to tell me how I needed to get an education, so I wouldn’t have to depend on a man

How could I not become a feminist when I listened to the empowering lyrics of Garbage, No Doubt, Alanis Morissette, Tori Amos, Bjork, and Sarah McLachlan — to name a few. I also watched in awe as Madonna used sex as power. These women had no fear and screamed bloody murder about having to be a good girl. Here are some highlights from my internal, eternal playlist:
